New Delhi, September 2: A joint search and rescue operation is underway at the Hathnikund Barrage in Haryana’s Yamunanagar district after two soldiers of 1 Para Special Forces (SF) went missing in the Yamuna river during a night training exercise on Tuesday, Hindustan Times reported.
The incident took place when five personnel were carrying out the exercise and their army boat developed a technical snag. The boat was subsequently caught in strong currents and carried downstream towards the barrage.
According to the Chandigarh-based defence public relations officer (PRO), teams made immediate efforts to retrieve the boat. However, it became trapped in strong eddies near the sluice gates and eventually capsized, sweeping the crew away in the strong currents. Two personnel remain missing.
Search and rescue teams from the Indian Army, Indian Air Force, National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) units from Haryana and Uttar Pradesh, local police and the civil administration have been deployed for the operation. Authorities are continuing efforts to locate the two missing soldiers.
