New Delhi, August 10: At least 13 people were killed and 75 others injured after Ukraine launched a drone strike on Russia’s central region of Tatarstan on Monday, reported AP. Kyiv said it had targeted an oil refinery in the industrial city of Nizhnekamsk, located more than 1,000 kilometres (620 miles) from the Ukrainian border.
“At this moment, 13 people have been killed” in the attack on Nizhnekamsk, the regional press service said in a statement on Monday. Another 75 people were injured, with 21 of them hospitalised, authorities said. Russia’s Investigative Committee, which probes major crimes, said a child was among those killed. The regional government also said citizens of Tajikistan and Uzbekistan were among the victims.
Ukraine’s General Staff said it had hit the Taneko refinery, operated by oil giant Tatneft, as part of its campaign to “reduce the military potential of the Russian aggressor”. Notably, Tatarstan is a major energy-producing region and home to several large oil refineries that Ukraine has increasingly targeted as part of its retaliatory strikes.
