New Delhi, September 2: The inaugural ICC Women’s Champions Trophy will be held in India from February 14 to 28 next year, with six teams set to compete for the title. All matches of the first edition of the tournament will be played at the Cricket Club of India in Mumbai and the Vadodara International Cricket Stadium in Vadodara.
The tournament was initially scheduled to be held in Sri Lanka. However, it has now been shifted to India as Sri Lanka Cricket continues to undertake the reforms outlined at the ICC’s Annual Conference in July. The ICC evaluated Bangladesh, India and South Africa as potential replacement hosts based on its established host evaluation criteria before recommending India. The decision was subsequently ratified by the ICC Board on September 1.
Calling the tournament a new chapter for women’s cricket, ICC Chairman Jay Shah said the inaugural edition would bring together the world’s best teams in a high-quality competition while giving teams greater motivation to climb the rankings and earn a place on the global stage.
Australia, England, India, New Zealand, South Africa and Sri Lanka will compete in the tournament, with all six teams aiming to become the inaugural champions. The event will be played in the T20I format. The teams will face each other in a round-robin league, with the top two sides progressing to the final, which will be played on February 28.
