New Delhi, September 29: Asian Games debutant Neeraj Chauhan stunned South Korea’s three-time Olympic medallist Kim Je-deok 6-4 to reach the quarter-finals of the men’s individual recurve event at Aichi-Nagoya on Tuesday. The 24-year-old Indian archer held his nerve in a closely fought contest against the reigning World Championships bronze medallist. Chauhan opened with a perfect 30 to win the first game, while the second ended 29-29.
Je-deok responded by taking the third game 30-29, before another 29-29 split in the fourth left the scores tied at 4-4. Chauhan then produced two 10s and a 9 in the decider, while Je-deok faltered with an 8 on his final shot to seal the Indian’s victory.
Chauhan had earlier defeated Indonesia’s Riau Ega Agatha 6-4 in the 1/16 elimination round. He will now face Bhutan’s Paris Olympian Lam Dorji for a place in the semi-finals. India’s Dhiraj Bommadevara, the World Cup Finals champion and qualification topper, also advanced to the quarter-finals.
