New Delhi, August 27: Former South Africa Test captain Dean Elgar has announced that he will retire from all professional cricket at the end of the 2026 County Championship season, bringing his more than two-decade-long career to a close. The 39-year-old left-handed opener confirmed his decision through Essex, where he has continued to make an impact in county cricket after retiring from international cricket in January 2024.
Elgar said his decision was largely influenced by his desire to spend more time with his family in South Africa. “I feel it’s the right time for me now. I’m not getting any younger, 39 years old, and I’ve got a lot of things going on back home with regards to a young but growing-up-very-quickly family,” Elgar said, as quoted by Essex Cricket.
“It’s the right time for me now to be present at home and be there for my partner and my kids,” he added. Reflecting on his career, Elgar said the journey had been a great one but confirmed that it would come to an end after the current county season. “It’s been a great journey so far. It’s not done yet, but at the end of the season, I will be retiring,” he said.
