New Delhi, September 1: The government has notified the Semicon India Programme 2.0, with an outlay of ₹1.27 lakh crore, aimed at strengthening semiconductor manufacturing and building a robust chip ecosystem in the country. Union Minister for Electronics and Information Technology Ashwini Vaishnaw on Monday said India could account for nearly 10% of the global semiconductor market in the coming years and play a much larger role in the global semiconductor value chain.
Addressing a press briefing in New Delhi, Vaishnaw said the government’s focus is on integrating India firmly into the global semiconductor value chain, covering areas from wafer fabrication to chip production. After releasing notifications for all six pillars of the Semicon 2.0, the minister said global semiconductor industry stakeholders increasingly view India as a preferred destination for major investments in the coming decades.
Vaishnaw highlighted the pace at which projects under the first phase of the programme moved from approval to groundbreaking and commercial production, saying it had received particular attention from the industry. He also pointed to India’s talent pool, policy certainty and ease of doing business as factors driving growing interest in the country as a base for semiconductor manufacturing and design.
The minister said India’s broader objective is to become an indispensable part of the global semiconductor supply chain, with international industries increasingly relying on the country for both production and design. He further stressed that developing the entire semiconductor ecosystem would lay the foundation for sustained growth of India’s chip industry over the next 50 years.
