New Delhi, September 2: Nepal Prime Minister Balen Shah has formally thanked India and China for their rapid assistance following the devastating flash floods that struck the country on August 26, highlighting the role of both neighbours in the ongoing rescue and relief operations.
Addressing Parliament, Shah thanked India and China for quickly sending emergency assistance, technical teams and relief supplies after the disaster. The acknowledgement comes as rescue operations continue across the worst-hit areas.
The floods devastated parts of Nepal and China’s Tibet region, destroying roads, bridges, settlements and hydropower infrastructure. India has been among the countries providing relief supplies and specialised assistance.
New Delhi has now delivered a fifth tranche of relief material to flood-hit Nepal, with the Indian Air Force conducting multiple sorties to transport emergency supplies. India had also offered specialised search and rescue assistance following the disaster. Indian teams have been involved in operations around hydropower tunnels and in forensic work linked to the large number of casualties and missing people.
Meanwhile, the death toll from Nepal floods crossed 1,200 on Wednesday as rescuers battled rain and debris to trace people believed to be trapped in tunnels along the Bhotekoshi River and underground powerhouses.
According to Nepal’s National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority, the death toll has reached 1,204 after more bodies were recovered from eight districts affected by the floods. As many as 4,216 people remain missing a week after the disaster devastated towns and villages across Nepal’s northern and central regions.
