New Delhi, August 28: At least 579 people have died after powerful flash floods surge and landslides swept through Nepal’s Bhotekoshi and Trishuli river regions earlier this week (August 26), according to The Hindu. In neighbouring China, five people have died and 558 remain missing after floods hit areas along the Nepal border in Tibet. Rescue teams are continuing to search for survivors, while Nepal Police said more than 4,500 people have been rescued.
Nepali authorities have said the disaster may have originated in the Lhende Khola on the Nepali side. The Lhende Khola is a high-altitude transboundary river that begins in Gyirong County in Tibet before flowing south into Nepal, where it joins the Bhotekoshi and Trishuli river systems.
Scientists believe an ice-and-rock collapse may have caused debris to block the Lhende valley temporarily. The blockage was then followed by a massive surge of water and debris, which swept downstream into the Bhotekoshi and Trishuli rivers.
