New Delhi, September 9: The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has carried out 34 demolition actions and sealed 17 properties across its 12 zones over the past two days, according to a statement issued on Wednesday. It has also identified over 1,200 buildings being used as paying guest (PG) accommodations, housing nearly 24,000 occupants, as part of efforts to create a database and assess their structural safety, reported PTI.
The intensified enforcement comes after a building operating as a boys’ PG accommodation in south Delhi’s Satya Niketan collapsed, killing seven people. The MCD said it is assessing PG buildings for structural vulnerabilities, particularly those with more than five storeys and RCC-framed structures, as well as those with more than four storeys and load-bearing brick-wall structures.
Following field assessments, the buildings are being categorised as “visibly safe”, “visibly repairable – needs minor repairs”, “visibly repairable – needs major repairs” and “visibly vulnerable/dangerous”. As part of Wednesday’s drive against violations of building bye-laws and the Master Plan of Delhi, the MCD issued 22 show-cause notices and passed four demolition orders.
