New Delhi, September 2: Iran fired on the US allies in Gulf early Wednesday, retaliating against a night of American bombardment that Iranian officials said included a deadly strike on a wedding party, reported AP. The latest escalation came after a monthlong lull in fighting. The six-month war has pushed up oil prices, disrupted the global economy and created growing political challenges for US President Donald Trump’s Republican Party ahead of the November midterm elections.
Fighting has intensified since the US military struck Iranian rocket launchers on an island in the Strait of Hormuz over the weekend. Washington said the launchers were being prepared for use in laying mines in the strategic waterway.
Iran responded by firing missiles at American bases in Jordan, though the attacks were intercepted. The renewed hostilities come as US military resources face growing pressure and political scrutiny in Washington. Meanwhile, Iran’s economy has been hit hard by American sanctions and a naval blockade.
