New Delhi, September 12: The European Commission has approved an additional €6.1 billion in funding for Ukraine to procure defence products, including air and missile defence systems, ammunition, drones and electronic warfare equipment. The funding is aimed at helping Ukraine deal with the continued intensification of Russian ballistic missile and drone strikes.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said the approval will allow Ukraine to purchase the Patriot equipment it needs to better protect its skies from Russian attacks. She added that the EU, along with its member states and NATO, would continue supporting Ukraine while strengthening Europe’s own defence.
The funds will support the procurement of defence products from both EU and Ukrainian companies. Following an agreement by EU member states on Monday, Ukraine can also use the funding to procure PAC-3 missiles for Patriot systems.
The package, funded under the €90 billion Ukraine Support Loan, includes five derogations from standard eligibility conditions. Three cover Ukrainian-made drones and components exceeding cost thresholds, while two apply to US-made equipment, particularly PAC-3 missiles, including through the NATO-coordinated PURL mechanism.
The Ukraine Support Loan includes €30 billion in budgetary aid and €60 billion for defence during 2026-2027. With the latest approval, the €28.3 billion allocated for Ukraine’s 2026 defence support has been fully allocated, covering specific equipment, suppliers, quantities and implementation timelines.
The Commission said the rapid availability of critical defence products in the required quantities remains essential for Ukraine’s military capabilities. It added that speeding up EU deliveries through destocking, reprioritising orders and increasing production remains crucial. The Commission has already disbursed €8.35 billion in defence funding for Ukraine this year, with more funding expected to follow.
