New Delhi, September 20: Ukraine launched what Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin described as the biggest drone attack yet on the Russian capital on Sunday, as Russians voted on the final day of a parliamentary election that President Vladimir Putin has presented as a test of support for his policies and the war in Ukraine, reported Reuters. The drone strikes killed two people in the Moscow region and two others in the Kherson region, including an election official, according to Sobyanin and election authorities.
A facility at Moscow’s oil refinery, which has been targeted previously, was also damaged in the attacks. “The biggest attack by enemy drones has been repelled,” Sobyanin said on Telegram, claiming the attack was planned to disrupt the elections but failed to do so.
The State Duma election is the first since Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. The ruling United Russia party is expected to retain its dominance in the legislature, with critics saying Russia’s political system leaves little room for dissent.
The Kremlin is likely to present the election results as evidence of public support for Putin’s policies and the war in Ukraine, which has now entered its fifth year with no end to the conflict in sight.
