New Delhi, September 15: India has expressed deep concern over the worsening security situation in the Red Sea and strongly condemned Houthi strikes on Saudi Arabia, saying such attacks threaten regional stability and international maritime routes, including the Bab-el-Mandeb.
Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said the issue was discussed during a bilateral meeting between External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud on the sidelines of the BRICS Summit. He said the two ministers discussed several regional and international developments, including the situation involving the Houthis.
India reiterated its opposition to attacks on critical infrastructure and international sea lanes, condemning the strikes on Saudi territory, including civilian infrastructure and economic assets. “We are deeply concerned also with the escalation in the situation that we see in the Red Sea region,” the spokesperson said, adding that such attacks “undermine regional stability and threaten freedom of navigation through the Bab-el-Mandeb.”
India also said it hoped peace and stability would be restored in the region at the earliest. Despite the ongoing tensions, he said energy supplies to India from the region remained uninterrupted. “We continue to receive energy supplies from that part of the world,” the spokesperson said.
