New Delhi, August 27: India wrapped up their Women’s FIH Hockey World Cup 2026 campaign on a high, defeating world No. 5 Germany 3-1 in the fifth-place classification match in Amstelveen, the Netherlands, on Thursday.
The victory earned the Indian women’s hockey team a fifth-place finish, their best result at an FIH World Cup since the inaugural women’s edition in 1974, when India finished fourth.
For world No. 9 India, Ishika scored in the 43rd minute, while Navneet Kaur struck twice in the 44th and 47th minutes. Germany’s only goal came from Lynn Krings in the 59th minute.
India ended the tournament with two wins, three draws and one defeat from their six matches at the FIH Hockey World Cup.
Their only defeat came against defending champions Netherlands. India also held higher-ranked People’s Republic of China, England and Australia to draws during the tournament. Their other victory came against South Africa, whom they defeated 6-1, their biggest win of the tournament.
