New Delhi, August 31: The Supreme Court on Monday declined to pass any immediate order against the Cockroach Janata Party’s (CJP) proposed protest march on September 5, saying there was currently no basis to assume that the demonstration would lead to any untoward incident.
According to India Today, a bench headed by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant said maintaining law and order was the responsibility of the government and police. The court asked the petitioner to approach the authorities concerned, saying it was confident that they would act within the legal framework.
The court found no immediate circumstances warranting a pre-emptive restriction on the march but left the door open for the petitioner to approach it again if the situation changes. “If something alarming is happening, then you can always make a mention,” the CJI said, while making it clear that any such intervention would have to concern a matter within the court’s judicial domain. The matter is scheduled to be heard on September 10.
The CJP had announced the fresh protest march on August 24, accusing the Centre of failing to honour assurances given when its nationwide agitation against the NEET paper leak was called off on July 25. The party has since claimed that some commitments, particularly those concerning FIRs and written assurances, remain unfulfilled.
