New Delhi, September 9: Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Wednesday met Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake in Colombo and discussed various aspects of the multi-faceted partnership between the countries, including ways to promote the safety, security, peace and prosperity of the region. Singh arrived in Sri Lanka on Tuesday for a three-day visit.
During the meeting, he conveyed PM Narendra Modi’s greetings to President Dissanayake and highlighted the deep friendship between the people of the two countries, rooted in their strong historical and civilisational ties. He also congratulated the Sri Lankan president on the completion of two years of his government, according to a statement issued by the Ministry of Defence.
The two sides reaffirmed their commitment to working together as “civilisational twins, close neighbours and maritime partners” for the development and welfare of their people, while jointly contributing to the safety, security, peace and prosperity of the region.
Dissanayake recalled his previous interactions with PM Modi and reiterated that Sri Lanka would not permit its territory to be used for activities that could harm India’s security interests, the statement said. The Sri Lankan president also thanked India for the relief assistance extended under Operation Sagar Bandhu following Cyclone Ditwah, as well as the comprehensive rehabilitation package provided by New Delhi to support reconstruction and rehabilitation efforts.
