New Delhi, August 31: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday met Russian President Vladimir Putin in Bishkek on the sidelines of the 26th Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit. This was the first meeting between the two leaders this year.
During the meeting, PM Modi and President Putin reviewed the progress of India-Russia cooperation across several areas, including politics, trade and economy, defence, energy, space, mobility and people-to-people ties. The two leaders also welcomed the outcome of the 27th India-Russia Inter-Governmental Commission on Trade, Economic and Cultural matters, held in Moscow on August 24, 2026.
The leaders also discussed India-Russia cooperation in multilateral forums, particularly BRICS, which India is chairing in 2026. They exchanged views on key regional and global developments, including the conflicts in West Asia and the Black Sea region, which have affected maritime trade and the safety and security of Indian seafarers. PM Modi reiterated that dialogue and diplomacy were the way forward to resolve conflicts.
Both leaders agreed to remain engaged to further strengthen the Special and Privileged Strategic Partnership between India and Russia. They noted that bilateral ties have continued to grow and have remained resilient despite geopolitical uncertainties.
