New Delhi, October 5: OpenAI Chief Executive Sam Altman said the benefits of artificial intelligence justify accepting some risks and argued that the technology should remain broadly accessible to the public. “We believe that the world should accept some bad things happening for the benefits of this technology and people having the agency,” Altman said in an interview with Politico’s technology-focused newsletter Decoded, reported Reuters.
Altman said OpenAI and rival Anthropic have fundamentally different views on AI regulation. He said he understood the argument that increasingly powerful AI should be controlled by a single lab to prevent misuse, but called that “a completely unacceptable trade-off.”
He defended OpenAI’s lighter-touch approach to regulation, saying he would not accept a system aimed at ensuring there are no major hacks, misuse, scams or other harmful consequences from AI. “I think people will do tremendously — orders of magnitude more — good stuff than bad stuff,” Altman said.
His comments come amid a growing debate within the AI industry over the pace of development and the risks posed by increasingly capable systems.
