New Delhi, September 15: Kalyan Bainsla, the driver accused of hitting a woman biker in Gurugram, was arrested from Rajgarh in Rajasthan on Tuesday, police said, two days after his speeding car allegedly rammed into her bike and sent her skidding on the road, PTI reported.
The arrest came after Gurugram Police added a charge of attempt to murder under Section 109 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), which carries a provision for imprisonment of up to 10 years. The case was initially registered under Sections 281 (rash driving) and 125 (causing hurt) of the BNS.
The biker, Shivani Chauhan, who identifies herself as Sia on social media, had released a video making serious allegations against Bainsla following the incident. She questioned why he did not stop after hitting her if the crash was an accident and alleged that she was deliberately targeted because she is a woman biker.
Sia also claimed that the car occupants approached her after the incident and misbehaved with her, alleging that they appeared to be intoxicated. Another video, recorded by a rider travelling behind her, appeared to show the car moving towards her bike and hitting it from the side after she did not stop when signalled.
Bainsla, however, denied deliberately hitting Sia and said he lost control of his car near a U-turn. He admitted the collision was his fault but claimed he fled because he feared that the group of bikers would assault him and his family.
“I did not hit them intentionally… near a U-turn, I lost control of the car, and the collision occurred. It was my fault; I admit it,” Bainsla said. Bainsla, who owns a gym and describes himself as an international kabaddi player, said he was travelling with his sister and two cousins at the time of the incident. He has also deactivated his Instagram account following the controversy.
