New Delhi, September 25: Google has announced a new “Call for Me” feature for Gemini that allows the AI to call businesses on a user’s behalf and complete tasks, including navigating automated phone menus, speaking to staff and waiting on hold. With the feature, users can ask Gemini through the mobile app to make a call to a business for a specific task. This could include checking the opening hours of a store, asking about the price of a service or getting other information from a business.
Gemini can also handle more detailed requests, such as checking whether a particular tool is in stock at a hardware store or rescheduling an appointment. During a call, Gemini can introduce itself, navigate automated menus and speak with staff. If the call is placed on hold, the AI can wait and continue the conversation once someone from the business is available.
To use Call for Me, users need to open the Gemini app and begin their prompt with “@Call for me”. They can then provide specific details about what they want Gemini to do, including dates, times, preferences and alternative options. Before making the call, Gemini will show users a summary of the task. This includes the phone number it plans to dial and the details it will share with the business. Users can review the information, make changes if needed and then give Gemini permission to make the call.
Users can follow the call through a live transcript and can also listen to the audio. They remain in control throughout the process and can cancel the call or take over at any time. If a user takes over, Gemini will inform the person on the other end before leaving the call. However, the AI cannot make emergency calls or complete payments on a user’s behalf. It also cannot share sensitive personal information such as passwords.
The feature is currently in beta and is limited to users aged 18 or above in the US with a Pixel 11 series device and a paid Gemini AI subscription. It can currently make calls only to US phone numbers, with daily limits on the number of calls. Google said it is initially rolling out the feature on a small scale as “real-world conversations are nuanced” and the company wants to improve it before a wider rollout.
