New Delhi, September 21: The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay on Monday removed Prof Suryanarayana Doolla from the post of Dean (Administrative Affairs), days after the suicide of a 22-year-old student on the campus. In an official email, IIT Bombay Director Prof Shireesh Kedare said Doolla had been removed from the post with immediate effect. “Any further action will be taken after investigation,” he said, reported PTI. Doolla had earlier served as Dean (Student Affairs).
Sahil Ravindra Wakode, a second-year BTech student in the Department of Energy Science and Engineering, was found hanging from the ceiling fan in his hotel room on the IIT Bombay campus in Powai on Friday evening. According to officials, the incident occurred hours after he was allegedly caught using a mobile phone during a mid-semester examination.
Wakode’s family alleged that he faced institutional harassment and caste-based discrimination before his death. The allegations triggered protests by students on the campus, who claimed that he had faced severe pressure and threats of academic suspension.
Following a complaint by Wakode’s parents, police registered an FIR on Saturday under charges of abetment of suicide under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and provisions of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. A professor has been named as an accused in the case, which is being investigated by the Crime Branch, police said.
