New Delhi, September 6: Iranian state media reported that the country had attacked a US naval vessel, claiming the vessel was trying to enter an area that Iran considers restricted in the Strait of Hormuz.
Following the report, Capt. Tim Hawkins, spokesman for US Central Command, dismissed the claim, saying, “The report came from Iranian state media and it’s a total lie.” The statement came a day after the U.S. said it had struck Iranian oil tankers in retaliation for Iran launching ballistic missiles at Navy warships.
Attacks resumed last week after roughly a month of quiet. The war began with US and Israeli attacks on Iran on February 28. However, since a ceasefire agreement was announced in June, on-and-off fighting has continued, with both sides seeking to inflict military and economic pain as negotiations have collapsed.
