New Delhi, September 6: At least one person died, two are critical and several others remain trapped under debris after a six-storey building collapsed in southwest Delhi’s Satya Niketan on Sunday afternoon. Six people have so far been rescued from the building, while a search operation is underway for more survivors.
The police reportedly said that two people were rescued and declined to provide a figure for those trapped. Local police, the fire brigade, ambulances and other emergency services are at the spot, Delhi Police said in a statement.
The building, which served as a 75-bed paying guest accommodation, collapsed around 1.30 pm, officials said. The owner of the building lives in Gurugram. Satya Niketan is located near Delhi University’s South Campus and has a high population of student residents.
The official social media handle of the Delhi CM Rekha Gupta stated, “Rescue and emergency response operations are underway on a war footing at the site of the unfortunate building collapse in Satya Niketan, RK Puram. Teams from NDRF, Delhi Fire Services, Delhi Police, DDMA, MCD, CATS and Civil Defence are on site. An adjacent building has been vacated as a precautionary measure. Every possible effort is being made to safely rescue those trapped and provide immediate assistance to affected families.”
