New Delhi, September 5: Prime Minister Narendra Modi defended India’s 7.8% growth figures, saying the achievement comes at a time when the world is facing the impact of the West Asia crisis and challenges to international trade.
Addressing students at Shree Ram College of Commerce during its centenary celebrations, PM Modi hit out at the Opposition and critics of the government, accusing them of adopting a pessimistic approach towards India’s progress.
Recalling his visit to the institution in 2013 as the BJP’s prime ministerial candidate, PM Modi said the country’s situation at the time was gloomy, with headlines dominated by corruption, cross-border terrorism, soldiers being killed along the LoC, high inflation, the Current Account Deficit, India being described as part of the “fragile five” economies and policy paralysis.
He contrasted this with the present, citing growth in manufacturing, indigenous defence production, peace in Jammu and Kashmir and the Northeast, a decline in terrorism and the push for Atmanirbharta, or self-reliance. “When I came here in 2013, I had talked about three types of people: those who say the glass is half full, those who say it is half empty and those who say it is full — half with water and the other half with air,” PM Modi said.
He said India had since moved from “policy paralysis” to “policy dynamism” and described it as the fastest-growing major economy in the world.
