New Delhi, August 26: At least seven people have been confirmed dead after a massive flash flood swept through the Bhotekoshi river in Rasuwa, a mountainous district in central Nepal, early Wednesday, The Kathmandu Post reported.
The flood has caused major damage to settlements and infrastructure along the river. At least 25 people had been rescued by Wednesday afternoon, according to the Nepali Army spokesperson. The Nepali Army, Armed Police Force and Nepal Police have been deployed for search-and-rescue operations, with 14 helicopters being used in the efforts.
According to the report, market areas and security posts are among the places that have reported major damage. Nine Armed Police Force personnel stationed at Timure, near the Nepal-China border, have also been reported missing. Authorities have not yet confirmed what caused the floods. Officials at Nepal’s Flood Forecasting Division said they had received informal information that a landslide may have blocked a river in Tibet before the swollen river broke through.
Nepal’s Consul General in Lhasa said Chinese authorities have been unable to establish contact with security personnel deployed along the border.
