New Delhi, August 16: US President Donald Trump has once again pushed for stricter voter identification rules in the United States, citing India’s electoral system and Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar as an example.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump said Kumar had recently asked the US administration how elections could be conducted without requiring voters to have a valid photo ID. Trump also referred to India’s last general election, saying around 646 million people voted, with less than 1 per cent casting their ballots by mail, and every voter being required to have a valid photo identity document.
Using India’s election system to strengthen his argument, Trump urged the US Congress to pass the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) America Act.The proposed legislation would require voters to provide documentary proof of US citizenship while registering and show a valid photo ID when voting. The bill has already cleared the House of Representatives but continues to face opposition in the Senate.
